Is Shopify Right for Your Business? A Few Questions to Ask First

We get asked about Shopify almost as often as WooCommerce these days, usually by people who’ve heard it’s “easier” without being totally sure what that means for their specific business. Neither platform is universally better the right one depends on a handful of honest questions about how you actually plan to run your store.

How much do you want to manage yourself?

Shopify is built to be managed without a developer on call hosting, security, and updates are handled for you as part of the platform. WooCommerce gives you more control, but that control comes with more responsibility for keeping things running. If you’d rather not think about hosting or server maintenance at all, that alone can tip things toward Shopify.

Do you need something WordPress already does well?

If your site is more than just a store a blog, service pages, a portfolio, content that needs real flexibility WordPress tends to handle that mix more naturally than Shopify, which is built store-first. If commerce is the entire site, that difference matters less.

What’s your app and plugin budget, ongoing?

Shopify’s app ecosystem is excellent, but many of the apps that make a store fully functional come with their own monthly fees that add up. WooCommerce’s plugin costs tend to be more one-time-purchase or self-hosted. Neither is “cheaper” outright it depends on which specific features your store actually needs.

How much do you want to own the platform long-term?

With Shopify, you’re building on their platform, under their rules, at whatever price they set. With WordPress and WooCommerce, you own the code and the hosting outright. For some businesses that’s an important distinction; for others, it’s not a priority at all.

Where we come in

We work across both WordPress/WooCommerce and Shopify, and we’d rather point you to the platform that actually fits than sell you the one we’d prefer to build. If you’re weighing this decision, that’s exactly the kind of thing worth a proper discovery call before committing either way.

“The best platform is the one that fits how you actually want to run the business not whichever one is trending.”
